Ava's Story: An Inclusive and Interactive Storybook Experience
The Problem Space:
Negative social stigma against individuals (school kids) with
ADHD have a significant impact on these individual’s social lives, independence, education, and future studies (finishing high school, going onto study at uni/other tertiary education). Social stigma is taught to children mostly by their parents.
The Solution:
It is proven that co-learning with a kid and their parent/guardian helps children learn better. Given that stigma is learnt by the child from the parent: they both need educating. Therefore I am proposing an interactive storybook app to be used by both the child and retrospective parent to educate themselves around ADHD and therefore put their uneducated bias to bed.
Ava’s Story focuses on the story of Ava: a young girl (around 6-8 years old) with ADHD. It relays to the audience the behaviours that make her different and ways her classmates and teachers perceive these behaviours. This story is brought to life through a story book app with elements such as bright illustrations, animations, and interactive discussion points. This story book app is aimed towards 6–8 year old’s and their respective parent. The story is meant to be read together to educate both parties on the topic of ADHD. Through education stigma around ADHD will be reduced in both the child and parent. Therefore, stopping the line of generational prejudices and establishes a more inclusive school setting.
